Federalist Society event on Congressional regulation of credit markets

Volokhite Todd Zywicki is among the speakers at a Federalist Society event on often counterproductive Congressional responses to turmoil in the housing and credit markets being held this Tuesday at the National Press Club. CLE credit available.

The U.S. Senate held a series of no fewer than eight hearings entitled "Turmoil in U.S. Credit Markets." The House recently passed the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2008 and the Neighborhood Stabilization Act of 2008, both in reaction to issues in the housing lending industry. Is legislative or regulatory reform required or advisable? Will a "bailout," as critics contend, lead to future risky behavior by lenders and borrowers? Or is government intervention necessary to stabilize the housing market and perhaps even the general economy?

Congress has also scrutinized the credit card industry and aims to tighten regulations on credit card companies through two measures: Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) has introduced the Fair and Justifiable Credit Card Interest Rate Act of 2008 in the House and Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) and Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) introduced the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act in the Senate. Please join us at the National Press Club on May 20 for a conference that will examine the subprime lending industry and credit card regulation.
