Majority opinion written by Justice Stevens, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony Kennedy, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito in the majority. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Souter and Stephen Breyer dissented.
