As Tucson joins Portland, Ore. as the second Catholic diocese to file for insolvency protection (see Aug. 10), Seton Hall Law School is planning a Nov. 5 conference on Bankruptcy in the Religious Non-Profit Context (via Mirror of Justice). And from Amy Welborn, a vignette from a clergy-abuse case in a Northern California courtroom: "Arguing for the church, lawyer Paul Gaspari said the Constitution forbade punishing the church for the standards it sets for the ordination of priests" as distinct from its supervision of them in priestly duties.
